Describe your family’s norms, values, communication styles, geographic proximity, ways of dealing with problems, roles available, and social supports as they relate to aging and older family members. You should plan to interview family or extended family members to assist with gathering this information. What formal and informal supports are used by your family or extended family? How do different family conditions (e.g., the availability of a married spouse in old age, widowhood, or the presence of grandchildren) affect the experience of aging in the family? What plans have you made for aging? (I.e. do you have long-term care insurance, do you expect Social Security or Medicaid to be available? Will your insurance need change over time? Will you be covered by insurance in retirement by your employer or will you have to find insurance? These are just some of the things you can consider. Review chapter 7 for more ideas of what you need to ponder.)
